What is Art in Space?
In this article, the Art that we are talking about refers to things that are not scientific, the creative and imaginitive things. Of course, that opens up a huge world. So, we are trying to focus on the what and why of art in space. There are a few primary aspects to Art in Space:
- Can you create in space in a way that you cannot on Earth?
- Is there value in associating art with Space?
- Is Space part of the art?
There are outcomes from those questions:
- Does Space add value to an artistic piece?
- Would the art exist without Space?
- Is the art impossible without Space?
Because Space, today, is largely unattainable, then adding ‘Space’ to *ANY* piece of art could, can and should add value to that art.
If Space were an everyday thing then Art in Space would mean much less.
Today, Art in Space is scarce and the value of art is based on relevance and scarcity.
Those two fundamental questions might be:
- ‘Do you want to own it?’
- ‘How many other people want to own it?’
Investors will only see ownership as a value that keeps it from others. Art lovers will see it as a thing that they want that someone else owns.
I can’t afford the Mona Lisa, but I don’t and wouldn’t want to own it either. That makes sense to most people – famous art is out of the financial reach of the majority of society. And, most of society does not want to ‘own’ it.
NFT and Art
If you are reading this article then you may already know that NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token. If you are not familiar then read this brief article.
To create an NFT artwork, an artist first creates a digital file, such as a JPEG, PNG, or GIF. The artist then mints the file into an NFT, which is a process that involves storing the file on a blockchain and assigning it a unique identifier. Once the file is minted, it can be sold or traded on an NFT marketplace.
The buyer of an NFT artwork does not own the copyright to the artwork. However, they do own the unique token that represents the artwork. This gives them the right to display the artwork, sell it, or trade it.
NFT artworks have become increasingly popular in recent years. In 2021, a digital artwork by Beeple was sold for $69.3 million. This sale helped to legitimize NFT artworks as a new form of art collecting.
There are a number of benefits to using NFTs for art. First, NFTs can help to ensure the authenticity of digital artworks. Second, NFTs can make it easier to sell and trade digital artworks. Third, NFTs can provide artists with a new way to monetize their work.
However, there are also some challenges associated with using NFTs for art. First, NFTs can be expensive to create and mint. Second, NFT artworks are still a relatively new phenomenon, and the market for them is still developing. Third, there is some concern that NFT artworks could be used for money laundering or other illegal activities.
Overall, NFTs offer a number of potential benefits for artists and art collectors. However, it is important to be aware of the challenges associated with NFTs before investing in them.
Here are some of the characteristics of NFT art:
Uniqueness: Each NFT is unique and cannot be replaced. This is because each NFT is assigned a unique identifier on the blockchain.
Scarcity: The scarcity of NFT art is determined by the number of tokens that are minted. For example, if there are only 100 tokens minted for a particular artwork, then the artwork is considered to be scarce.
Transferability: NFT art can be transferred from one owner to another. This is done through the blockchain, which allows for secure and transparent transactions.
Authenticity: NFT art is authentic because it is stored on the blockchain. The blockchain is a secure and transparent ledger that records all transactions. This means that the authenticity of NFT art can be easily verified.
Artists in Space
Damien Hirst
Damien Hirst, the renowned British artist, is sending an NFT of his art into space. The NFT, which is a digital token that represents ownership of a piece of art, is a collage of Hirst’s iconic Spot paintings. It will be launched into space on a SpaceX rocket in 2023.
The project, which is called “Space Orbit,” is a collaboration between Hirst and the space exploration company Space Perspective. The NFT will be placed in a capsule that will be attached to a Space Perspective balloon. The balloon will then be launched into space, where it will orbit Earth for several days before returning to Earth.
Hirst said that he was inspired to send the NFT into space because he wanted to create a work of art that would “transcend the physical world.” He said that he believes that the NFT will “become a symbol of our collective journey into the future.”
The Space Orbit project is a significant development in the field of NFTs. It is the first time that an NFT has been sent into space on a commercial rocket. This could open up new possibilities for the use of NFTs in the future. For example, NFTs could be used to represent ownership of physical objects that are in space, such as satellites or space stations.
It is still too early to say what the long-term impact of the Space Orbit project will be. However, it is clear that this project is a significant step forward in the development of NFTs. It is a project that is sure to generate a lot of interest and discussion in the years to come.
Krista Kim
The Space Orbit project is not the first time that an NFT has been sent into space.
Krista Kim’s “Piece of Mind” is a digital artwork that was launched into space in 2021. The artwork is a 3D rendering of a crystalline meditation pod, and it was sent into space on a weather balloon. The balloon reached an altitude of 120,000 feet before returning to Earth.
The artwork is meant to represent a journey of self-discovery and enlightenment. The crystalline pod is a metaphor for the mind, and the journey into space represents the process of exploring one’s inner self. The artwork is also meant to be a meditation on the relationship between humans and technology. The use of a weather balloon to launch the artwork represents the potential for technology to help us connect with nature and the cosmos.
Kim said that she was inspired to create “Piece of Mind” after experiencing a period of personal turmoil. She said that she wanted to create a work of art that would help people to find peace and tranquility. She said that she believes that “Piece of Mind” can help people to “connect with their inner selves and to find a sense of purpose in life.”
“Piece of Mind” is a unique and thought-provoking work of art. It is a meditation on the relationship between humans, technology, and nature. The artwork is also a powerful symbol of hope and renewal.
In addition to the physical artwork, Kim also created a digital version of “Piece of Mind” that was sold as an NFT. The NFT was auctioned off on the SuperRare platform, and it sold for over $500,000. The proceeds from the auction were donated to charity.
“Piece of Mind” is a significant work of art that has the potential to reach a wide audience. The artwork is a powerful reminder that we are all connected to something larger than ourselves. It is also a reminder that technology can be used for good, and that it can help us to connect with our inner selves and with the world around us.
